House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been criticized on social media for comments she made about “ties” to China during a press conference on Thursday.

Pelosi said she always had a special connection to China because of her childhood memories.

“When I was little, I was told that if I dig a hole on the beach, I could get to China, so I always felt connected to that,” Pelosi said.

Pelosi made the comment during a trip to the Indo-Pacific.

“Are you saying this person was the perfect choice to visit Taiwan?” another Twitter user said.

Pelosi visited the Indo-Pacific last week and stopped in Taiwan on Tuesday, despite repeated threats from China not to visit the island.

“Our visit was one of several congressional delegations to Taiwan and in no way contradicted long-standing U.S. policy guided by the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, the U.S.-China Joint Communiqué, and the Six Guarantees. We will not,” Pelosi said in a statement. “The United States continues to oppose unilateral efforts to change the status quo.”
